Wainwright Building
This building was not the first skyscraper in America, but its modern metal structure produced the style that became popular later. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright called it the first human expression of a tall steel office building.
Empire State Building
Located in New York, Empire State Building is the tallest building and absolute symbol of this city. Moviegoers certainly remember the giant King Kong gorilla climbing to the top of it. Another famous film to which the symbol of New York is linked is "An Affair to Remember" (1957) with Carry Grant and Deborah Kerr.
The steel structure was erected in record time (13 months), largely out of the need to complete construction so that office space could be rented as soon as possible - the building being erected during the economic crisis. Steel beams were ordered with exact length and they arrived at the construction site having marked on them the exact assembly position. 57,000 tons of steel were used for the metal frame.
Willis Tower
Just as the Eiffel Tower identifies with Paris, so the Willis Tower is a symbol of the city of Chicago. The 110-storey building was the tallest building in the world until 1996. Welded steel frames were used in its construction that form vertical tubes providing the necessary rigidity to limit the force of the wind. This system reduces the amount of construction steel required for a high-rise building.
