Why Metal Buildings Are Such a Great Choice for Areas with a Lot of Thunderstorms

Best Choice Steel Buildings Weather Withstanding

If you ask an expert, chances are they’ll tell you that Denver steel buildings are some of the best when it comes to dealing with thunderstorms. This might seem counterintuitive, since metal conducts electricity rather than insulating against it, but because of some important scientific facts about metal buildings, it actually works out better than you can imagine.

First, it’s important to note that, considering the many millions of volts associated with lightning strike, even the best insulating material will not protect your building. Even air itself becomes a conductor, and the concrete used for most buildings won’t stop lightning from doing some serious damage.

Because of the excellent conducive capabilities of metals, they are the best materials for constructing a Faraday cage. That type of design essentially creates an electric circuit between the clouds and the Earth, essentially bypassing anything that is located inside the cage. Because of this particular trait, if they are built properly, metal buildings can be struck by lightning multiple times without harming anything or anyone located inside of them.

Most metals are also fireproof, and because they conduct electricity very well, they won’t heat up as much as other materials when hit by lightning. On the other hand, a wooden building, for example, might catch fire and also ignite the surrounding area. Concrete isn’t much better, and metal is the only material that can absolutely help to prevent that risk.
