Steel`s great metallurgical properties allow its continuous recycling, while preserving its efficiency.
Why should the steel be recycled?
- We save energy. Recycling steel saves more than 70% of the energy needed to produce from raw materials.
- We save natural resources. Recycling a ton of steel means saving 1.5 tons of iron ore, half a ton of coke and about 1.3 tons of solid waste.
- We reduce pollution. Recycling a ton of steel reduces air emissions by 86% and water pollution by 76%.
Steel can be recycled in several ways. First, it can be re-melted. About two thirds of new steel are made from old steel. Using ore cannot be completely eliminated because many steel products remain in service as durable goods for decades, and in all this time, the demand for steel continues to grow. In the construction industry, another way of recycling consists in reusing steel products. In this case, steel is not re-melted; it simply enters a new phase of use. This process offers an even greater environmental benefit than recycling itself. Many steel products and STEEL BUILDINGS can be easily reused. For example, pipes from gas, water or oil transport networks can be reused for sub-crossings, metal formwork, drilled piles or bridges.
