The red color for the exterior of some buildings is not a modern invention. Falu red is traditionally the most popular color for painting houses in Sweden, representing a true national symbol. And it is not just the aesthetic factor, because hundreds of years ago people could not choose from the variety of paint and varnish colors available today.
A popular belief used to be that barns were always red so that cows can easily find their way home. But when scientific research proved that cattle are actually colorblind to green and red, this theory fell. Clicking here will take you to a selection of barns available today.
The popularity of this color always resided in its ingredients, which make it very suitable for exteriors, because it provides very good protection.
Early farmers in New England used to seal their barns with a mixture of linseed oil (which is orange colored), and ferrous oxide/ iron oxide that would turn the mixture red. Ferrous oxide killed moss and fungi – which are plentiful on barns, but it also sealed the building very effectively.
If in the past, the red was a color used only for the homes of the rich, especially for the aristocracy, later simple people adopted this trend too, painting their wooden houses and barns. Later, the color was adopted in modern areas, being still very popular today.
